Fish Banners

Kindergarten-1st Grade -- STRIVE

Project: Using replicas of a trout, students made a fish print on cloth, then decorated it with tempera paint and glitter glue. We discussed the colors and lines that one might see in the ocean.

After O'Keeffe

Grades 6-12 -- STRIVE

Project: Students studied the works of Georgia O'Keeffe then selected a painting to work from using a grid pattern to help them capture itslikeness. Students also practiced mixing colors while trying to re-create the colors used by O'Keeffe.

Masks

Grades 6-12 -- STRIVE

Project: Students made color sketches of their masks before beginning to build them with cardboard and paper-mache. They were asked to select only three colors with which to paint their masks and they were encouraged to use found-objects for decorating.

Jasper Johns Flags

Grades 9-12 -- R.C.C.S.

Project: While the country's presidential election was taking place (2004), students were studying the work of Pop Artist Jasper Johns. Johns is an artist who likes to incorporate symbols of American culture, such as the American flag, into his work. After looking at a series of Johns' flag pieces, students worked in groups to create their own large Pop Art flags. Some groups elected to make BOCES flags using the school colors: white, black, and green, and others chose to focus on the presidential election. All groups were asked to consider using words in some form -- either by using transluscent paint over newspaper or by painting words directly on their flags.

Pop Art Portraits

Grades 9-12 -- R.C.C.S.

Project: All students studied the work of Andy Warhol. We discussed the used of repetition and color in Warhol's work. Some classes used crayons to color four versions of their own portraits in the Pop Art style. More advanced classes worked in the computer lab and used the Photoshop program to colorize and distort their own digital images.

Surreal Montages

Grades 9-12 -- R.C.C.S.

Project: After looking at the work of Salvador Dali, students selected a full page photo from a magazine and then looked for images from other photos to cut out and paste into their original photo to create a surreal or dream-like image. Students were encouraged to cut out shapes from decorative paper as well as photos. In writing class, students were asked to write about another student's montage.

Self-Portraits

Grades 9-12 -- R.C.C.S.

Project: Before drawing their self-portraits, students studied facial proportion and practiced re-creating facial features while using photos and eachother for reference. Since the focus of the project was to create a realistic-looking face, rather than a likeness, students created symbols to represent the things they like to do and people they'd like to become, and included those symbols in their drawings. Some students chose to display their autobiographical questionaires alongside their drawings.

Figure Sculptures

Grades 9-12 -- R.C.C.S.

Project: Students prepared for this project by making gesture drawings of the human figure -- using eachother as models. Most students took turns modeling by silently pretending to play a sport. Once the rest of the class guessed the sport, the model froze in position for a minute or two while the class drew him or her. After students completed several gesture drawings, they selected their favorite and referred to it while making their sculptures out of plaster strips laid on top of a foil armature.
